O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and was a graduate of Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. Before shifting to Los Angeles, she appeared in a variety of commercials. O'Grady's early career was as a Montgomery Ward model, where she was also featured in several commercials. She first appeared on the screen with the romantic drama Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a regular role in the ABC Drama China Beach alongside Dana Delany. Additionally, she appeared in a variety of programs. She appeared in both the independent and TV-produced films. Her first big role was that of Donna Abandando on the ABC police drama NYPD Blue. O'Grady played the big-haired team secretary between 1993 and 1996. Each year she was awarded an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting actor in a Drama Series. Barone was in the fourth season of Seinfeld Episode The Shoes as Gail Cunningham Chef who wanted Elaine Benes shoes. In the early 1990s she was a regular cast member in the show Carol & Company with actress Carol Burnett. Barone was also Carol Willick Ross Geller's previous wife on her debut Friends appearance.
