O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in the early part of 2005, when she was still a high school student. The judges loved her voice and she advanced to the Top 100 round. O'Neil received excellent praise from the judges. However, she suffered significant losses in the top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals after she was placed into the bottom three and bottom two as well as the bottom two. It was a shock to the judges and they advised that the public vote for Melissa as the contestant with the best ability to sing. O'Neil was never in the top 3 after numerous outstanding performance. The judge Werner predicted, after two other breathtaking performances, that O'Neil would win of her Canadian Idol competition, as she would be the first woman and youngest ever to win the show in the wake of the September 7 finals in 2005. O'Neil received a phone call shortly after her win from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her triumph on Canadian Idol.
